Mike over at The Online Photographer responds to the speculation about Micro Four Thirds, or M43 as one of his readers suggests we call it.
I have to disagree somewhat though. Sure a lot of it fantasy perhaps, but actually there is really a lot that is pretty clear at the moment (See my previous post on the subject). Contrast AF: Very very likely because of lack of space between lens and sensor.
EVF instead of optical viewfinder: Almost certain. Same reason as above.
Swappable lenses: Quite certain, although fixed lens compacts could be made as well.
Form factor: See diagram in previous post as well as DP1 form factor. Bigger than regular compact, smaller than DSLR
This points, at least in my opinion to a very specific kind of camera. Details like number of megapixels and image quality might be unclear, but the overall idea behind the camera isn't, which is why people are getting excited.
No matter what the end products end up being, it is a new class of camera, with image quality higher than regular compacts and likely close to that of a DSLR. That is plenty to get excited about.
